If the thought of a photoshoot makes your stomach drop, you are absolutely not alone.
Almost every client who books a personal branding session with me tells me some version of the same thing before we start: "I really don't like having my photo taken."
By the end of the session, most of them feel completely different. Here's what actually helps.
Start With Why You're Doing It
Camera nerves usually come from feeling watched or judged. But a personal branding session isn't about being judged - it's about being SEEN by the people who are already looking for exactly what you offer. Reframing the session as "helping my future clients find and trust me" rather than "being photographed" changes the entire experience.
You Don't Have to Perform, You Just Have to Show Up
A lot of camera-shyness comes from imagining you need to be a completely different, more polished version of yourself in front of the lens. You don't. The best personal branding photos aren't stiff or performative - they capture you doing what you actually do, in a way that feels like you on a really good day.
That's exactly why a proper session includes coaching through poses and expressions, not just pointing a camera and hoping for the best. My job is to get you there. I do this through having fun with you and bringing out your unique essence. We’ll joke, we’ll laugh, I may show you my awesome dance moves, I may get you to show me your best moves as well. You won’t even remember you have a camera in front of you!
Preparation Beats Willpower
Confidence in front of a camera isn't a personality trait some people have and others don't - it’s mostly being prepared. Knowing what to wear, having a plan for your outfits and locations, and going in with a clear idea of the images you actually need all make an enormous difference to how relaxed you feel on the day. This is exactly why a pre-shoot consultation is built into every branding package - so nothing is left to chance. We can dive into your marketing strategy and what you’re really going to need them for, whether that’s a need right now or something you plan on creating in the near future. There’s nothing worse than having an awesome idea and not being able to execute it because you don’t have the content, or being nominated for an award and not feeling like you have the right images to send in or celebrate your wins!
It Gets Easier Every Time
Like anything new it's always scary the first time. The first professional photo session is almost always the hardest. Clients who come back for a second round of content always say it felt so much easier the second time around, because they already know what to expect and have seen what's possible. What I love about photographing business owners at different times throughout their journey is that I can see their personal growth and how far they’ve come in their images. If I can see that, then so can everyone else!
You Don't Need to Wait Until You "Feel Ready"
Courage comes before Confidence.
Almost nobody feels fully ready before their first session. The confidence often comes after, not before. If you're waiting to feel 100% comfortable before you invest in yourself and your business, you might be waiting a long time - and your business is missing out on that trust-building content in the meantime.
If you're camera-shy but you know you need to show up, that's exactly who these sessions are built for. Let's talk about what that could look like for you.
